The R-Rated Director’s Cut of ‘The X-Files’ Movie Has a Title and Release Date

One of the many reasons The X-Files ranks among the most beloved genre shows of all time is that it wasn’t afraid to be weird. It wasn’t afraid to be scary. But, for its second trip to the big screen, creator Chris Carter was told to make things a little less scary in order to get a PG-13 rating. Almost 20 years have passed since then, but next month, fans will get to see the full version of what Carter planned for Mulder and Scully’s second theatrical case.

After a slight delay, Disney just officially announced “the brand new, never-before-seen R-rated Chris Carter Director’s Cut” of 2008’s The X-Files: I Want to Believe is coming to Hulu on August 14. The film will “faithfully restore the filmmaker’s original vision” and, to make sure fans know the difference, it’s got a new title: The X-Files: I Want to Believe Vrach Frankenshteyn.

Google Translate tells us that “Vrach Frankenshteyn” is Russian for “Victor Frankenstein,” who we’re pretty sure is not a character in the film (unless this is a freaking wild director’s cut). So, we’d imagine, the title is just a fun allusion to how this version has been put back together and has risen from the dead.

News of the director’s cut first broke back in the summer of 2025 when Carter appeared on David Duchovny’s podcast, Fail Better with David Duchovny. “I made it too scary,” Carter said at the time. “Now I have a chance to go back and make the scary movie that I always intended.”

A year later, the director’s cut mysteriously appeared on a listing of upcoming shows and films coming to Disney+ in June 2026, but when the date finally arrived, the film was nowhere to be found. Polygon reported the delay was “due to some last-minute adjustments being made to the film.” Well, it seems those adjustments have been made.

So what was added? How much scarier is it? Will it, in any way, change what we know and love about Mulder and Scully? Audiences will find out on August 14. Are you ready to believe?

The initial version of this story stated I Want to Believe was the first X-Files movie when it was, in fact, the second. We’ve updated the story.
