If you are looking for a movie to terrify and gross out your loved ones, burn August 4 onto your calendar. That’s when Evil Dead Burn, the latest film in Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead franchise, debuts for digital download ahead of a physical media release on September 22.
Bloody Disgusting, very appropriately for this movie, broke the news of the date and has some extra info too. Like the fact both the digital and physical media releases will come with three featurettes on the franchise’s legacy, the stunts, and one of the film’s most impressive shots. Evil Dead Burn coming home less than one month after its theatrical release says both everything you need to know about how it did and nothing about the film itself. The film has grossed just over $60 million globally, including only about $30 million in the U.S., while Evil Dead Rise, the previous film in the franchise, only did about $70 million domestically but got close to $150 million worldwide. So Burn isn’t just off the pace; it’s a distant second. A huge disappointment financially.
And yet, the film itself delivers. I was absolutely delighted and disgusted by the film, which follows a family who has ties to the Book of the Dead and the Deadites that occupy this world. No, this sequel doesn’t have the same level of humor as other films in the franchise, but the kills are gruesome and the lead character, played by Souheila Yacoub, is one you love to cheer for.
Basically, if you’re a horror fan and missed Evil Dead Burn in theaters, we’d recommend giving it a shot. It’s very gross, very entertaining, and ends with some excellent moments that tease the future of the franchise. You can read about those here.
