Theme parks tend to do a little something extra for Halloween, and this year, Universal Studios Japan is doing even more extra for the occasion.
With this year being the park’s 25th anniversary, Japanese attendees will get to experience two big horror-focused attractions. First is Zanzō (or Lights Out: Nightmare Isolation), where guests enter a facility that’s researching nightmares. As they’re tasked with getting out of private rooms housing “unescapable situations” with others or on their own, attendees will be “slowly consumed by a fear [with] no end.” As the translated press preview notes, this is the USJ’s first R-18 attraction, and will require a signed waiver before going in.
If that doesn’t sound like your thing, Universal Studios Japan also has an attraction based around Capcom’s Resident Evil Requiem. Known as The Dive, parkgoers will explore recreations of the Wrenwood Hotel and Rhodes Hill Chronic Center, two of that game’s major locations. Expect “creatures attacking from every action,” including The Girl and the Kitchen Chef.
Resident Evil has been at many a Halloween Horror Night at Universal Studios Japan. The inclusion here isn’t just because the franchise (known locally as Biohazard) turns 30 this year, it’s also to help celebrate the annual event. HHN celebrates two anniversaries this year—the 25th for its Orlando launch in 1991, and its 15th for Singapore’s in 2011. Japan wouldn’t get this until 2012, but the timing’s apparently too good to not celebrate its local 15th a little ahead of schedule.
For anyone traveling as the year winds down and headed for Universal Studios Japan, Zanzō will be around until November 8, and Resident Evil Requiem: The Dive until December 27. The former will cost extra to get in, while The Dive is included with admission.
