At BlizzCon on Saturday, Blizzard Entertainment announced it was partnering with Netflix to develop an animated Diablo series. Some may recall this show, along with ones for fellow Blizzard IPs Overwatch and World of Warcraft, were caught up in a lawsuit between the two companies years ago. It seems those could still be in play, as Blizzard’s press release notes Diablo’s “only the beginning, with even more taking shape across our universes.”

The original game released in 1996, with the entire series being isometric action-RPGs. Players take on the role of different classes to kill monsters, gain loot, and do it all again in the hopes of getting stronger and saving the dark fantasy world of Sanctuary. The most recent entry, Diablo IV, released in 2023, with two expansions to its name and was quite successful for the studio at launch. (Lord of Hatred, the most recent, came out this past April.)

At the very end of August, a Puck News report claimed Xbox was looking to make a bigger push into Hollywood adaptations. Diablo and the other Blizzard titles clearly factor into that, but it’s unclear if this means Netflix will get the console maker’s entire IP library or just pull from the ones it finds most interesting. After all, Netflix is no stranger to adapting games: Castlevania, Tomb Raider, and Sonic the Hedgehog are just a few that’ve hit the streamer.

We’ll have more on the Diablo series as news emerges.
