‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Has a Wild Deep Cut ‘Star Wars’ Toy Reference

In the 1980s, Kenner made so many Star Wars toys that sometimes they weren’t in the movies. Some were based on early designs, some got cut from the final films, and some were actually in the films but were almost impossible to see. Basically, every once in a while, you’d see a toy and think, “Wait, what is this?”

With The Mandalorian, though, creators Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have constantly shone a spotlight on toys or characters that never quite got their time in the sun. There’s the K79-S80 Imperial Troop Transport, though that was also seen in Star Wars Rebels a lot. The Mandalorian himself was just a way to finally make a story with a character that looks like Boba Fett (who was first revealed as a toy). And now, we have another example in the upcoming film, The Mandalorian and Grogu.

In the first 18 minutes of the film, which screened at CinemaCon this week, the Mandalorian is hunting a rogue Imperial officer and chases him to an AT-AT. However, the officer escapes in what I described as a vehicle that “kind of looks like a mini AT-AT head.” Keen-eyed Star Wars fans then noticed something fitting that description appeared on a new poster for the film, by artist Matt Ferguson. That’s exactly what I saw in the footage. And sites like Yakface pointed out that it appears to be an INT-4 Interceptor, a vehicle that was made into a toy for the original trilogy—but never actually got into the original trilogy.

In the years since, the INT-4 has popped up in a few places, such as the mobile game Star Wars Commander as well as Marvel’s Return of the Jedi Ewoks comic in 2023, which you can see below. But now, it’s fully a part of a Star Wars movie. And that’s pretty cool.

What happens to the INT-4? Well, you’ll have to read our full description of the footage to find out. Or, head to the theater on May 22 to see The Mandalorian and Grogu.
