Oh Wow, ‘Amazing Digital Circus’ Is the Number One Movie at the Box Office

If you were to tell a film bro that guaranteed moneymaker movies like Obsession, Backrooms, Michael, and The Mandalorian and Grogu were getting trounced at the box office by an independent YouTube animated show’s theatrical finale, they’d probably think you were joking. Turns out that’s exactly the case with The Amazing Digital Circus: The Final Act.

Similar to how creators like Markiplier, Curry Barker, and Kane Parsons have made immensely successful transitions from YouTube to the big screen with their ambitious projects, fan-driven independent animated projects are experiencing a similar boom. And the current talk of the town (or more appropriately, the circus coming to Tinseltown) is The Amazing Digital Circus. While Deadline reports that the film was projected to make $6.8 million on the opening day of its limited-time theatrical run, the film has reportedly earned $8.3 million on Thursday, edging out Scary Movie ($7.7 million) from the top of the box office charts, according to box office and film marketing analyst Exhibitor Relations Co.

Originally created by animator Gooseworx and produced in partnership with Glitch Productions, The Amazing Digital Circus is a surreal psychological comedy animated series that follows a group of humans trapped in a circus-themed virtual world ruled by an AI ringmaster. Each episode of the show sees its ensemble, reimagined as cartoon characters, tackle their own baggage while attempting to escape the absurd, existential horror of the chaotic world they’re trapped in, lest they become smoke monsters. In layman’s terms, the show is a lot like Lost, but with a colorful assortment of characters trying to escape their eponymous purgatory.

The series became an overnight success in 2023, becoming the most-watched animated pilot on YouTube, and many fans of animation, especially in Gen Z, are crazy about it. So it’s no surprise that Amazing Digital Circus swept the box office on its opening night, given that its trip to theaters also serves as its series finale. It also doesn’t hurt that emotions are at an all-time high among its fandom, thanks in no small part to the controversies surrounding its theatrical release, which have only intensified those feelings. For starters, The Amazing Digital Circus‘ script allegedly leaked online ahead of its release, according to Popverse. And if that weren’t enough to put fans in a tizzy, there was backlash over a resurfaced livestream in which some of the show’s voice actors made a racist joke, and creator Gooseworx posted about her concern that the show was becoming “way more trouble than it’s worth” in the lead-up to its theatrical finale.

‘THE AMAZING DIGITAL CIRCUS’ creator Gooseworx says she knows that people are upset about her response after the series finale got leaked.

“I kind of just wanted to make a cartoon, & it’s ended up being way more trouble than it’s worth. I really just can’t keep my heart in this… pic.twitter.com/bMtS3fsYYY

All that to say, the animated show that a lot of folks love seems to have speed-run its way into toxicity and controversy, as its ilk are wont to do when they get this huge, and it’s showing up alongside The Amazing Digital Circus‘ theatrical finale box-office numbers.

Regardless, the show is a pretty fascinating watch. It’s got an I Have No Mouth, But I Must Scream energy to it, and its cartoonish characters have an endearing dynamic that makes it hard not to root for them to get out of that circus-tent hell. But most importantly, The Amazing Digital Circus‘ success is especially profound as an independent animated work, standing in stark contrast to shows with corporate overreach being felt in their DNA. It just sucks that there’s a lot of baggage in recommending it, given all the above. But should the lore info dump not deter you from checking out what all the fuss is about, you can catch The Amazing Digital Circus‘ finale in theaters now.
