‘Moana’ and ‘Evil Dead Burn’ Share a Weak Opening Weekend

Two big movies came out this weekend, and despite a clear winner, they both ultimately started off “meh” at the box office.

That’d be Disney’s live-action Moana remake and Evil Dead Burn. Per Variety, the former launched to $95 million worldwide, with $43 million of that coming from North America. With projections of $60-$65 million domestic and $140 million worldwide, its claim of being “the #1 movie in the world” doesn’t hit quite as hard than if it’d done what analysts had expected. As is, Moana’s just barely able to avoid being the lowest-grossing live-action remake by earning $1 million domestic more than Snow White did last year. Audiences are much higher on it than critics, but do they like it enough to keep it alive with word of mouth?

Likewise, Warner Bros.’ Evil Dead Burn missed the expected mark, grossing $13.7 million in North America and $27 million worldwide. Whereas Moana has fairly clear reasons for not having a strong turnout—sometimes a Disney remake just doesn’t hit, and this franchise had a movie just eight months ago—Burn may be a bit more of a headscratcher. 2023’s Evil Dead Rise wound up the best-performing entry in the series at $147 million worldwide, but that was the franchise’s first new movie in a decade. Conversely, Burn is just “another Evil Dead movie,” as Evil Dead Wrath is due out in about two years. Not to mention, Burn isn’t the summer’s only scary movie: Backrooms and Obsession had longer tails than anyone could’ve predicted, so maybe some folks are full of horror until September and October come around.

Mayhaps Evil Dead Burn and Moana will gain some legs over the rest of the month and into August before they hit streaming. That depends on how audiences feel about The Odyssey on Friday and Spider-Man: Brand New Day at month’s end—both of those have been marketed and made to feel like the real heavy hitters of July.
