‘Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’ Almost Led to an Insomniac Venom Game

With Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Insomniac Games introduced a new version of Venom. The symbiote was defeated, but it seemed likely for the studio to bring the antihero back. Now it seems it wasn’t just likely, it was part of the endgame before real life scuttled those plans.

In a recent Love It Film episode, Miles Morales voice actor Nadji Jeter told the hosts that Insomniac was working on a Venom solo project. According to him, a reason for it not existing was the death of Tony Todd, who voiced the symbiote in Spider-Man 2 and passed away a year after the game’s release. During the episode, Jeter took time to remember Todd as his “uncle”—a relationship started when Todd called Jeter his nephew—and called it a “very hard time” after his passing. “Me and Yuri [Lowenthal] went to his funeral. I love him to death, and I still wish he was here.”

Jeter claims he got to see this Venom game’s opening and emphasized the word “game” to describe it. That suggests this might have been similar in size to Miles’ own solo outing rather than an add-on to the base Spider-Man 2. His use of “were” also indicates this is either canceled or on the backburner, but journalist Jason Schreier said on ResetEra it “isn’t true” that the project’s been canceled. io9’s reached out to PlayStation for comment and potential clarification.

When Insomniac was hacked in 2023, internal documents showed potential roadpmaps for the studio’s games from that point and spanning to the early 2030s. A standalone Venom game was mentioned, leading many to speculate it was coming in the near future. With no news on it since then, hopes grew February’s State of Play event would mark its grand debut when leakers claimed this would be the case, which then didn’t happen. Add on the general hunger for Insomniac to continue the Spider-Man story and disappointment its co-op Spidey game got canceled, and Venom has become just one strand in a tangled gaming web.

Update: 4/25/26 @ 12:43 PM ET: This story has been updated with additional information on the status of the Venom project.
