The ‘Invincible’ Game’s Story Brings Action and New Voices

Prime Video’s Invincible just ended its fourth season, but the show’s not going away just yet. Next week sees the release of the fighting game Invincible VS, and developer Quarter Up used the opportunity to highlight the game’s story mode.

Before now, the focus has been on the show’s characters beating the hell out of each other. Nothing new for fighting games, but like the game’s sole OC Ella Mental, the story mode is an original idea from the show’s creators and offers up a different spin on previously adapted events. The main thrust of the story looks to explore what if Nolan never changed and still led the Viltrumite to invade Earth, and it falls on Mark and the Guardians of the Globe to stop it.

Since the show’s creators are involved, Invincible VS has much of the show’s cast reprising their roles, to a point. For the most part, actors like J.K. Simmons and Gillian Jacobs are back, respectively, as Omni-Man and Atom Eve, and you can hear it all the way through. New additions to the cast include Aleks Le as Invincible instead of Steven Yeun, Michael Schwalbe as Powerplex (stepping in for Aaron Paul), and Gavin Hammond as Cecil (replacing Walton Goggins). Interestingly, Jason Mantzoukas returned for Rex Splode, but only for the campaign—in gameplay, Rex is played by Ryan Goldsher.

As some online have pointed out, this isn’t an uncommon practice in voice acting. Robert Downey Jr. voiced Tony Stark in the 2008 Iron Man game, but the actual superhero was played by someone else, and Mortal Kombat 1 had John Cena and Megan Fox voice characters whose physical noises were handled by other actors. With how much attention Invincible’s cast gets, the new actors fit in pretty easily, and if the aim really was to make the story feel like an episode of the show, mission accomplished.

Invincible VS comes out next week on April 30 for PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S.
