There’s been a lot of anime covered this weekend on account of Anime Expo 2026. Between the bigger reveals, some stuff might’ve slipped through the cracks, including the upcoming series Jurassic Shadows.
Produced by Cannon Code and directed by The Apothecary Diaries‘ Norihiro Naganuma—and reuniting him with some of that show’s staff, such as character designer Yukiko Nakatani and sound designer Shōji Hata—the original series is set in an alternate Tokyo 2029. Instead of dying by meteor, the dinosaurs lived on through breeding with humans, and now feed on them in secret while living amongst them. The only thing stopping dinosaurs from eating humanity into extinction are a group of ninjas using a special makeup that lets them unlock dino powers.
Reading the premise and then watching the trailer above, Western viewers will easily connect some dots between Jurassic Shadows and Power Rangers. The latter show used dinosaurs and ninjas for its color-coded heroes on a near-constant basis, and some seasons (like Wild Force) had the Rangers physically act like the animals they represented. Seeing these characters take on dino traits and go toe-to-toe with prehistoric beasts and humans aiming for world domination does make Jurassic Shadows seem like it could be a fun time in its own distinct way when it comes out.
Unfortunately, there’s no release for Jurassic Shadows at time of writing—but the studio’s promised to share more details on anime and its manga tie-in at a later date.
