Doomsday’ Concept Art Assembles the Teams

Marvel’s been quiet about Avengers: Doomsday since its quartet of trailers last year, but now we’ve got our best look yet at the film.

Attendees at this weekend’s Shanghai Expo clocked concept art created by longtime MCU artist and visual development head Andy Park. Park, who was among many laid off by Marvel earlier this year, drew the principle Doomsday cast, with nearly everyone segmented into teams and Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom and an outline of Loki looming over them all. (It’s something both men tend to do.) And as Park notes, this art both “commemorates that journey & reveals the characters & their looks for the first time.” Let’s get into it.

AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY – the final full film I had the honor of leading as Director of Visual Development at Marvel Studios.

On the left side, we’ve got Thor, Ant-Man, and Steve Rogers wielding Mjolnir, with the New Avengers—Bucky, Yelena, Red Guardian, US Agent, Ghost, and Bob—on the far side. The right has Captain America and Falcon flying above the Fantastic Four, Black Panther and M’Baku, and Shang-Chi. Finally, the center holds our returned X-Men: Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Mystique, Gambit, Beast, Magneto, and Professor X.

Note that Steve and Reed Richards stand closest to Doom here. While Reed and Doom are longtime enemies, Steve isn’t always in direct opposition against the ruler of Latveria, though the comics have recently built this dynamic up in Chip Zdarsky and Valerio Schiti’s Captain America solo. Marvel began its Avengers: Doomsday teaser run confirming Steve was back in action, so the art raises questions about why he’s as significant as Reed in Doom’s eyes. Also worth calling out is Namor’s MIA after they were featured in the chair reveal, for whatever reason.

Avengers: Doomsday is still expected to hit theaters on December 18.
