Good news for fans of Banana Fish—soon, you’ll be able to hear it performed by actual voice actors.
Come August 12, Netflix is adding MAPPA’s 2018 adaptation to its stable of anime for North America, France, and Ireland. To celebrate the occasion, the streamer also revealed voice actors for the two exclusive dubs: in English, Brandon McInnes and Jonathan Tanigaki will respectively voice Ash Lynx and Eiji Okumura, while the characters’ French voices will be provided by Sébastien Baulain and Grégory Laisné.

Last year, Banana Fish received its first-ever English and Spanish language dubs from Prime Video. Problem was, it was done with AI-generated voices, and turned out this was the first of a larger trend. No Game No Life Zero similarly got a dub with AI voices, with both being used to test a beta program that Amazon hadn’t previously announced. Put bluntly, nobody liked that, with anime fans and even some voice actors offering harsh words for this decision. That the dubs were pretty bad didn’t help things, and had everyone worried the tech could show up elsewhere.
It didn’t take long before the backlash led to the program getting rolled back entirely for English-language dubs without an explanation or apology given. Since then, Prime Video’s anime has used human performers for dubs. Since Banana Fish is no longer on Prime Video, Netflix will be the place to watch it for those who haven’t yet, or were turned off by last year’s genAI nonsense.
