While one of the joys of being head of programming at Apple TV is no doubt enjoying all the acclaim—like the recent slew of Emmy nominations for Widow’s Bay, Pluribus, Shrinking, and many more—that comes with the pressure of press and fans demanding to know when the next seasons of those shows might arrive.
Of particular interest is Severance, which wrapped up its second season in March 2025 with a cliffhanger and a rabidly invested audience. Speaking to Variety in the wake of the Emmy news, Apple TV’s head of programming, Matt Cherniss, offered an update… sort of.
While he couldn’t give any firm dates for Severance season three, he did say, “We’re moving along really well, and we’re nearing production on that. We’ve seen most of the material, and I think it totally delivers for the audience. With a show like Severance, the most important thing is that we deliver on sort of what those epic first two seasons delivered, and then it even gets bigger from there.”
Ok. “Nearing production” is good, especially since viewers had such an agonizing wait between seasons one (which premiered in February 2022) and two.
But what about Pluribus, which dropped its season one finale in December 2025? Again, Cherniss wouldn’t commit to a date (even the suggested year of 2028). And he also pointed to the fact that like Severance, you can’t rush a show like Pluribus. “Vince [Gilligan, Pluribus‘ creator] is really ambitious with season two and really taking time to make sure that the show lives up to everyone’s expectations,” Cherniss said. “It too is a very complicated show when it comes to executing and shooting … but we’re starting to see early drafts, and everyone’s moving at a good pace.”
One more, Cherniss. What about Widow’s Bay season two? We’ll allow a little more wiggle room since the horror comedy sensation’s first season just ended a few weeks ago, and its renewal news is also rather recent. But still, we need more.
“Well, Cheryl Eddy Katie [Dippold] is going to take the day off, I hope,” Cherniss said. “I know she’s already thinking about season two and going to jump into it as quickly as she can. We’re on it, and we know the audience is hungering for more episodes, so we’re going to try and move as quickly as we can. The show is a labor of love. It’s shot in a location [in Massachusetts] that isn’t always the easiest to shoot in. So there are some elements that do sort of dictate turnaround a little bit, but everyone’s working as quickly as they can.”
So there you have it. He is aware of that audience hunger. But we’ll keep seizing upon any and all updates, no matter how tiny, until new seasons of Severance, Pluribus, and Widow’s Bay arrive.
