A movie as epic and beautiful as Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey deserves an equally epic and beautiful poster, and io9 has your first look at exactly that.
Coda has teamed up with artist Rory Kurtz to release an incredible poster for the new film, which is now in theaters. It features Matt Damon as Odysseus, in all his victorious yet wounded glory, in either a bold blue or a bloody red. The blue is available as a timed edition through the end of San Diego Comic-Con on Sunday, July 26, while the red is a limited edition of 125. Here’s your exclusive first look at both versions.
That’s the standard version, a 24″ x 36″ screenprint on gold foil paper, which will be limited to however many are ordered through 11:59 p.m. PST on July 26. It costs $75. And here’s the variant.
The variant is also a 24″ x 36″ screenprint on gold foil paper, but is limited to 125. It costs $100.
“The Odyssey has always interested me,” Kurtz told io9 over email. “When Coda and I began work on this poster, nothing had been released by the studio for Nolan’s veiled masterpiece beyond a few sneak peek promo shots, but the story is so well known I had no issue recontextualizing Damon’s image. Here Odysseus is idolized in marble as he lives to become his own myth, but buried beneath Poseidon’s relentless ocean. He’s bound with rope, in a nod not just to the Sirens but to his duty as king, husband, and father. His back bristles with arrows from his relentless struggle not just to return home, but to survive that homecoming. Decades pass, the cracks form. The man who left never actually returned.”
Both posters are now on sale at codacurates.com, and San Diego Comic-Con attendees can pre-order one at booth 4900. Which means, yes, a select number of the variants are being held back for those in-person pre-orders.
