We’re Obsessed With the Hilarious First Footage From ‘Spaceballs 2’

While Amazon and MGM are certainly searching for more money by making a second Spaceballs, the film will not be called Spaceballs: The Search for More Money. Instead, at CinemaCon, Mel Brooks announced (via video) that the new Spaceballs is called Spaceballs: The New One, and they even played the first footage.

Lewis Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, and Josh Gad were joined by director Josh Greenbaum to show the footage, and here’s what we saw.

“Space. Dark. Cold. Infinite,” a voice says over footage of exactly that. But that changes to a group of people walking on a rainy cliff. “A universe filled with heroes and villains.” Two people, who look sort of like Poe Dameron and Rey from the back, approach a large circular door in the desert. They’re followed by a droid that’s trying to roll, only it’s a square, so it’s difficult. “Where the fate of the galaxy rests in the hands of a few. And blasters go PEW PEW PEW.”

In this vast desert, which looks and feels very reminiscent of Jakku from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, they find Dark Helmet’s helmet in the sand and wipe it off. There’s a quick shot of Yogurt in carbonite. Another shot of Yogurt (who looks very CGI) battling Dark Helmet with the Schwartz; only Helmet has three lasers instead of one. They’re jumping around sort of like Yoda and Dooku from Attack of the Clones.

Shots of an older, grizzled Lone Star coming out of a ship. A bunch of portals open. Shots of the alien from the end of the first movie performing, the Eagle One flying, a bunch of Harry Potter characters for some reason, and more.

Dark Helmet presses, not the ludicrous speed button, but the REBOOT button, and we got a trippy shot that mixes the VHS fourth wall break from the first film with shots of Lewis Pullman and Keke Palmer in a similar setup. There are also shots of young Pullman with what appears to be a new mog, played by Josh Gad.

A large ship shaped like a penis drops smaller, ball-shaped ships out of it. There’s a tiny, living slice of pizza. (Probably related to you-know-who.) The young Pullman battles with Spaceballs: The Flame Thrower. Someone knocks out one of the Spaceballs by putting a catcher’s mitt over their face. Another fires Spaceballs: The Rocket Launcher. The officer played by Stephen Tobolowsky makes a quick appearance.

Finally, we see a large version of Kylo Ren’s mask, and it opens to reveal Dark Helmet. He’s in a spaceship with Colonel Sandurz (George Wyner, reprising his role). “Look at us, sir. Back in the cosmic saddle after all these years,” Sandurz says. “Nothing can stop us now.”

Well, almost nothing. They’re old and have to go to the bathroom. “After this, no more stopping,” Helmet says as they both approach urinals. As they pee, a blue Na’vi from Avatar walks behind them and stands at a very, very large urinal. Helmet and Sandurz turn their heads to look at the Na’vi’s crotch and are in shock. “I see you,” Helmet says in perfect Na’vi.

As a huge Spaceballs fan, after the footage ended, all I wanted to do was watch it again. Go through every single shot and figure out what’s happening. Make this movie arrive as soon as possible. Only, that’s not possible. With the film not coming out for over a year, it’ll be a while until we get to see this footage again. But, we think, it’s going to be very silly, very fun, and hopefully worth the wait.

Here’s the clip of Brooks, who was not in attendance, explaining the title.
