While some horror purists might think The Blair Witch Project should remain back in 1999, encapsulated in the time and place that made it a found-footage sensation some viewers actually believed was real, Lionsgate is of a different mind. Over the years, we’ve had a sequel and a stealth sequel, and a fourth feature—a “new imagining“—is on the way. Now we know when our next trek into the backwoods will be: September 24, 2027.

Lionsgate announced the news with a brief social media video making use of the franchise’s signature stick figures:

As was previously reported, around when this new Blair Witch was announced, the trio of actors from the original film—Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams, and Joshua Leonard—issued a public statement asking the studio for proper compensation, considering the key role they’d played in the original film’s success.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago, and fans learned that Williams and Leonard would be aboard the new movie as executive producers, as would the original film’s directing team, Eduardo Sánchez and Daniel Myrick, and producer Gregg Hale. (Donahue, who now goes by Rei Hance, opted not to participate.)

Aboard to direct is emerging horror creator Dylan Clark, whose short film Portrait of God has also been tapped for a feature adaptation (with the backing of producers Sam Raimi and Jordan Peele, no less). His short Storytime is also being expanded into a feature, according to Deadline.

But this new Blair Witch Project entry will be Clark’s highest-profile release to date; if it’s successful, we can speculate that Lionsgate will keep heading back into those haunted woods for more. Do you have high hopes for this one, or do you think the Blair Witch Project era ended long ago?
