The First Trailer for ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ Takes Terror Stateside

Godzilla might have sunk to the depths of the ocean defeated at the end of Godzilla Minus One, but you can’t keep a good monster down for long—especially when Minus One went on to make kaiju history as a worldwide and award-winning success. Now, three years later, we’re ready for writer-director Takashi Yamazaki to take us back to Godzilla’s world… and it’s definitely a much bigger world this time around.

After screening to audiences earlier today at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Toho and GKids have now officially released the first teaser trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero, a direct sequel to the 2023 instant classic. Set in 1949, two years after the events of Minus One, Godzilla Minus Zero sees the return of Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe as the protagonists of the film, reprising their roles as Koichi Shikishima and Noriko Oishi as they still navigate the traumas left behind from their unlikely survivals of Godzilla’s first attack on Tokyo.

So neither of them is likely too pleased that Godzilla’s back again to cause havoc and stronger than ever. Even from the brief glimpses of the carnage we see here in the trailer, it’s clear Minus Zero is going even grander in its action scale (the film will also be the first-ever Japanese production filmed for IMAX), but while the bulk of that action takes place in Japan, that final shot of the teaser with Godzilla besides the Statue of Liberty makes it seem like the U.S. is also going to face some monstrous terror as well this time around.

“I am beyond happy to be able to participate in a film set two years after Godzilla Minus One, which is one of the most important works of my life. I also feel proud to have been able to work with Director Takashi Yamazaki and everyone on the team once again,” Kamiki said in a statement provided to press. “The pressure of participating in a Godzilla work loved by so many people remains the same as in the previous film, but I have done my absolute best so that everyone who watches it, and everyone who loves Godzilla, can enjoy it.”

“Following the previous film, I am grateful to be able to exist in the world of Godzilla Minus One as Noriko,” Hamabe added in her own statement. “My heart is already racing with excitement to share this grand moment with everyone as soon as possible, and see Godzilla Minus Zero in theaters soon. Since this work will be released in Japan and the U.S. around the same time, I am very happy to be able to share Godzilla’s shocking return not only with people in Japan but also with those in America. I pray that this work will also be one that everyone can enjoy and love very much.”

Godzilla Minus Zero hits theaters in Japan on November 3, the same date the original Godzilla released in 1954, and will open in the U.S. shortly thereafter on November 6.
