Beyond the Spider-Verse’ Footage Just Swung Into CinemaCon

Let’s do this one last time. After years of delays, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is slowly crawling towards your eyeballs with a release set for June 18, 2027. That’s still a long way away, of course, but producers/writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller (fresh off the success of Project Hail Mary) didn’t want to leave theater owners hanging in regard to the highly anticipated animated film and screened some brand-new footage at CinemaCon this week.

Last year’s CinemaCon was where we got our first, very brief, look at the film (along with its return to the release schedule), and this year we saw much, much more, showcasing just how epic things are about to get for Miles Morales and everyone in the Spider-Verse.

The movie picks up right where the last film left off, with Miles being captured by Prowler and Uncle Aaron in the other dimension. It’s a bit of a rehash of that scene with a few new additions, but then Prowler-Miles asks Spider-Miles who he is and realizes they both say “Morales” in a different way. This starts a little back and forth where they point out small differences, and Prowler gets in a quick “Are you bleeding from the armpits?” joke.

“My dad is going to die,” Miles explains, and Prowler asks how he would know that. “Try me,” he says. Miles then tries to explain canon events, and Prowler goes, “Okay, you tried.” He’s confused. But Miles talks about how heroes have the same basic things happen to each other in every universe (which was largely covered in the previous movie) and casually mentions that he’s Spider-Man, to which Prowler and the other Aaron laugh. That sounds so dumb, they say. What’s a Spider-Man?

Miles’ glitching stops the conversation. He says his atoms don’t like being in this dimension, and Prowler says he doesn’t like what his atoms are doing. They’re going to do something to him when Miles says, “I don’t want to hurt you.” You’re chained to a bag, they explain. To which Miles says, “Don’t watch the mouth, watch the hands.” He uses his electric powers and escapes.

“Let’s do this one last time,” we hear, and it’s young Aaron and Jeff, as seen in this image. Which, yes, means there are going to be some kind of flashbacks.

They’re the start of a much larger montage of Miles fighting Prowler, a car jumping over a drawbridge, Miles talking to Gwen, who is in a jacket with patches on it, and more. We even see his friends from the first movies. Peter says, “Ham, hold my baby.” “Gladly,” Spider-Ham says. “But I’m all out of milk.”

The crazy montage continues as Spider-Punk lays it out. “So you’re going to save your dad, beat Spot, and shake Miguel’s whole game by yourself?” As this is happening, there are a lot of colorful, quick cuts, including an image of Miguel looking out over the city as a ton of portals open like in Avengers: Endgame. We also see Spot, who looks like a huge mess of black lines, walking around. There are multiple versions of Times Square, what appears to be multiple people flying in space (maybe?), and finally, a line from Miles’ mom. “You’re not tough,” she says. “You’re strong.”

Honestly, it was almost too much to take in, and we wish you could see it. Hopefully, we’ll get a tease in a few months when that other Spider-Man movie comes to theaters. Here are a few other images.
