Does Mike Flanagan ever sleep? Fresh off his first-ever San Diego Comic-Con, the Carrie showrunner is getting that show ready for air, in post-production on the latest Exorcist film, wrote Clayface, and is permanently working on bringing Stephen King’s The Dark Tower back to life. Now, he’s joined up with another very popular world, one that we’ve been looking forward to for some time.
The BBC reports that Flanagan has been hired to write scripts for the long-awaited Prime Video adaptation of Warhammer 40,000, which is still expected to star mega-fan Henry Cavill. Deadline added the wrinkle that Flanagan’s in talks to join as an executive producer and, potentially, even the showrunner, but that’s still up in the air.
“This is a long-term partnership with Amazon—and these adaptations will take years to bring successfully to market,” reads the Games Workshop financial report where the news originated. “The project continues in line with our contractual agreement with Amazon. This same contract prohibits us from sharing certain specific details or commercial terms. What we can share is that Amazon has brought on board United Artists (UA) and Mike Flanagan. Vertigo and Henry Cavill remain involved as they have been for some time. Having completed initial outlines, Mike should soon be moving on to script. Meanwhile, UA have been decisive and brought their renowned pace and quality to the project.”
News of the series, based on the popular miniature wargame and its broader sci-fi setting, first broke in 2022 and has tiptoed through development ever since. Last we checked, Games Workshop, which owns the franchise, finally locked in an agreement with Amazon to adapt the series, but that was at the end of 2024. Now, it seems, some fresh blood has been added to hopefully push the project forward.
As io9 has previously written, Warhammer 40K is set in “a dark future where, as the series’ tagline dutifully tells us, ‘there is only war.’ The game takes place in a galaxy torn apart both metaphorically and physically by mass conflict between the forces of humanity, which has developed into a fanatically religious, xenophobic authoritarian society called the Imperium of Man and colonized thousands of star systems.”
