No, you’re not being visited by a killer machine from the future. You’re not experiencing déjà vu either. Earlier this year, James Cameron’s all-time-great sci-fi sequel Terminator 2: Judgment Day did, in fact, already return to theaters on a very limited basis to celebrate its 35th anniversary. But, in true Terminator fashion, now it’s back and bigger than ever.
On August 28, Terminator 2: Judgment Day will return to select theaters in 4K, RealD 3D, and other premium formats. That date is significant because it’s the day before Judgment Day itself, August 29, which is when Skynet gained consciousness and decided to wipe out all of humanity… back in 1997, of course. So it’s almost the 30th anniversary of that as well.
“T2 was made for theaters, and our lovingly prepared 3D version, coming back to the big screen, is the absolute best way to see the film,” writer-director James Cameron said in a press release. “I believe it’s safe to do spoilers after 35 years, so SPOILER ALERT: the good guys win against the AI superintelligence! And maybe that’s a message of hope we all could use this summer.”
This re-release is worldwide, too. While the U.S. (and Italy and Poland) get the film on August 28, Germany, Latin America, and the Czech Republic get it on August 27, France gets it on September 2, Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Hungary get it on September 3, and the United Kingdom gets it on September 4.
