Dave Filoni Teases His Plan for the Future of ‘Star Wars’

Over the past 10 years, the team at Lucasfilm has tried to make way more Star Wars movies than it actually has. For every film that actually hits theaters, there are probably three or four that we know of that didn’t see the light of day. And now, with two new presidents at Lucasfilm, all of that has to shift. The future of Star Wars is a huge question mark.

That begins to change next week with the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu. The film was produced and co-written by Dave Filoni, one of those new Lucasfilm presidents (along with Lynwen Brennan), and in a new interview, he spoke about how he’s approaching the future of the franchise he now controls.

“I’m just looking at the stories and the potential and planning what I’d like to do,” Filoni told Collider. “I believe in having an overarching idea and then saying, ‘Okay, it’s this many of that, and then we can have that.’ There are certain things that have been in motion already that, obviously, I want to continue. Jon [Favreau] and I have had a great partnership for many years now, telling stories. So, I look at the stories that I’m kind of planning and architecting, and I look at other creative talents that bring us, also, great stories, and I just try to find a way to make them all work.”

As things stand, after The Mandalorian and Grogu, the next Star Wars media that’ll be released is Filoni’s own show, Ahsoka. The second season is set to debut on Disney+ in early 2027. That’ll then be followed in May 2027 by Star Wars: Starfighter, a fully standalone adventure directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling.

After that? Well, let’s look at Filoni’s quote. He says, “There are certain things that have been in motion already that, obviously, I want to continue.” That’s most likely referring to a planned trilogy conceived by Simon Kinberg, which, rumor has it, will become Episodes X, XI, and XII. Those films might also incorporate the work director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy had been doing on a Rey movie.

Other movies that had been announced, such as those by James Mangold and Taika Waititi, are still, technically, on the table. And while those could fit into Filoni’s quote, we think his discussion of the storytelling he and Favreau have been doing is more telling. That certainly suggests the adventures of the Mandalorian and Grogu will continue, as well as Ahsoka.

To be honest, though, this is a very classic Filoni quote. He says nothing but means everything. Our guess is that we won’t know more officially until either August of this year, at the D23 Expo, or April of 2027, at Star Wars Celebration.

What do you think the next Star Wars movie will be after Starfighter? Do you trust Filoni’s vision?
