They Can’t Stop Showing Clips From the Opening of ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’

Anyone looking for a sneak peek at the new Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, over the past few weeks has almost certainly been shown the same clip: a snow-bound action scene that opens the movie.

First, it played for members of the press. Next, it played at CinemaCon. After that, Disney uploaded a chunk of it to Disney+. Monday night, it’s playing in theaters for fans, and now part of it is online too, which you can see below.

And, of course, moments from this scene are sprinkled all throughout the trailers that have been released. Yes, the opening few minutes of The Mandalorian and Grogu have become the centerpiece of Disney’s marketing for the film, which, we think, has its pluses and minuses.

On the one hand, keeping so much of the movie secret makes going to the theater that much more exciting. We still don’t have any real idea of what type of adventure Mando and Grogu get up to. Plus, it’s a very fun action scene. One that clearly brings to mind The Empire Strikes Back, with all the snow and AT-ATs, but also feels wholly Mandalorian.

On the other hand, what’s being hidden here? Is there something exciting that’s being held back, or is this simply the best thing in the movie? You sort of get that vibe from it. Wouldn’t a clip from another scene get people’s imaginations racing with potential and possibility? Our educated guess about all this, though, is that a large piece of the movie is being hidden. And, we think, it centers on Mando and Grogu teaming up with Rotta the Hutt for an adventure. All three of them, together, and the filmmakers simply don’t want any of that to get out. But we also think, if that’s indeed true, it could be a very fun and intriguing glimpse.

Ultimately, though, it comes down to how you like to consume movies before release. If you love any level of spoilers, this has been torture. The same scene, over and over, which reveals absolutely nothing. If you hate spoilers, though, knowing almost everything you’ve seen is from the first 10 or so minutes of the movie is very exciting. Surely, there are many more surprises to come in the remaining 110 minutes.

Which side of the argument do you fall on? Do you wish we’d see more of the film? Or is sticking to this scene a smart play to keep us guessing? Let us know below.

The Mandalorian and Grogu opens on May 22.
