“We’ve got to get the X-Men back to the ’90s.” That’s a line Bishop says in the trailer for X-Men ’97 season two, but it’s also what someone said at Marvel Studios a few years back. The decision to bring back X-Men: The Animated Series in this new form was one of the best Marvel has made in a long, long time, and now, two years after the hit first season, season two looks like it’s going to be bigger and better.

X-Men ’97 season two begins on July 1 and is comprised of nine episodes. In it, the X-Men have been spread across time, making them vulnerable to the evils of Apocalypse. To defeat him, it’s going to take an epic effort, one that will cost some of them their lives. Check out the emotionally charged trailer that also features more than a few blink-and-miss-it moments.

Was that actually Deadpool in there, or was it someone else becoming Deadpool? How will the X-Men overcome this larger-than-life threat? Can Apocalypse be defeated?

All those answers and more are coming starting on July 1 as season two “continues with the heroic mutant team of X-Men, divided and thrown across different eras in time as they struggle to navigate their return home. Meanwhile, back in the 1990s, suspicious foes and new strains of mutant intolerance are on the rise in the wake of the X-Men’s absence.” Or so Disney’s press release says.

X-Men ’97 once again features Ross Marquand as Professor X, Matthew Waterson as Magneto, Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Lenore Zann as Rogue, and George Buza as Beast. And, as you can see from the trailer, there will be more voices revealed soon.

Are you pumped for season two? Do you think it can top, or at least live up to, the first one? Let us know below. And check out this awesome Wolverine #1- inspired poster.

We’re back, baby.
