The first trailer for Onslaught teased how much damage Adria Arjona’s Army sniper will do in protecting her young daughter from a rogue gang of supersoldiers. The new trailer for Adam Wingard‘s latest film treats us to Dan Stevens‘ German mad-scientist character gleefully naming off all his creations, including Crybaby, Cockroach, and the Butcher.
The latter is portrayed by UFC champion Alex Pereira; he carries a meat cleaver, though surely his fists alone could wipe out a regular army.
At the recent San Diego Comic-Con, Wingard—known for a pair of Monsterverse Godzilla movies, but also You’re Next and The Guest—spoke about Onslaught‘s retro influences. Most importantly, he name-checked the films of genre great John Carpenter.
“John Carpenter has always been the main influence for me,” Wingard said at Onslaught‘s SDCC panel. “There’s something his movies do to me. It’s like magic. I just like the vibe … But I think with this film, out of Carpenter’s canon, Assault on Precinct 13, the original, was probably [the biggest influence].”
Onslaught‘s script was written by Wingard’s frequent collaborator Simon Barrett, from a story they wrote together. The cast also features Eric Wareheim, Reginald VelJohnson, Michael Biehn, Drew Starkey, and Rebecca Hall. It hits theaters, including IMAX, starting September 4.
