Sugar is a show that io9 didn’t initially cover when its first season arrived on Apple TV. Sure, we love Colin Farrell, especially on The Penguin. But while we as pop culture fans appreciate neo-noir tales of private investigators skulking around Los Angeles, io9 has a specific wheelhouse: sci-fi, fantasy, and horror. Sugar didn’t seem to fit into any of those categories… until it did.
This first trailer for season two—which promises more neo-noir flourishes and more skulking around Los Angeles—sure doesn’t lean into that particular aspect of the series, at least until the little wink at the end. Colin Farrell’s character John Sugar is not from around here, actually. He’s from somewhere very far away indeed.
Apple TV’s not trying to re-bury the twist, though. Here’s the official synopsis: “Season two ushers in the return of Los Angeles’s iconic private detective and film connoisseur John Sugar, played by Colin Farrell, who stayed on Earth in hopes of finding his sister as he takes on a new missing persons case—searching for the older brother of an up-and-coming local boxer. As the investigation expands into a sinister, city-wide conspiracy, Sugar must reckon with himself to answer the question—how far will he go to do what’s right?”
Sugar’s new season brings a new cast that includes Jin Ha, Raymond Lee, Tony Dalton, Laura Donnelly, Sasha Calle, and Shea Whigham. The first episode arrives June 19, followed by a weekly rollout of the eight-episode season on Apple TV.
