Ryan Coogler Is Shifting ‘Animorphs’ Into a Disney+ Show

This one’s for the 90s kids: K.A. Applegate’s Animorphs books will finally get a new TV show, courtesy of Disney+.

In the executive producer’s chair is Ryan Coogler through his Proximity Media banner. Per Variety, the show is in early development with The Testaments writer Bryan Wolcott on hand to write and executive produce. After Nickelodeon’s two-season adaptation, Hollywood turned its eyes toward adapting this again in 2020 as a feature film. Those plans eventually stalled out, paving the way for this new show. Neither Applegate or co-creator (and husband) Michael Grant were involved with that movie or Nick’s show, and it’s unclear if they’ll be involved here.

First releasing in 1996, Animorphs focused on five teenagers who get the ability to transform into any animal they touch. They use their powers to prevent a race of parasitic mind-controlling aliens called Yeerks from taking over Earth. Applegate and Grant told this story over the course of 54 books until the series ended in 2001, and it was known for being pretty good, pretty weird and dark, and having cool cover art showing the transformation process. Scholastic’s been adapting the books for graphic novels, with the sixth book, The Capture, having released last year.

With Animorphs, Disney continues its gradual hold on bringing 90s and 00s kids books to television. The third season of Percy Jackson is coming later in 2026, and there’s also a TV show for Eragon in the works, too. What’s next, Artemis Fo—oh, right.
