Ryan Condal Says He’s Done With Westeros After ‘House of the Dragon’ Ends

While A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms showrunner Ira Parker has said he hopes his Game of Thrones spin-off continues for many more seasons, the guy behind House of the Dragon has a decidedly different outlook. Ryan Condal’s series returns in just a few weeks with its third season, and he’s in the planning stages for its fourth. But, as previously announced, that will be the final installment of House of the Dragon—and Condal now says that will also mark his own exit from Westeros.

Speaking to Deadline ahead of House of the Dragon season three’s premiere, Condal said that once season four is done, “Anything is possible, but I think I have said what I have to say about Westeros.” In other words, don’t expect to see him getting hands-on if HBO decides to make another Game of Thrones spin-off, despite the fact that Condal just extended his deal with the network.

That doesn’t mean he’ll be rushing to get to the end, however. It sounds like he’s genuinely looking forward to exploring the last chapter of the Dance of the Dragons, predicting it will be “the biggest season we have made.”

Before that, though, he still has the current season to fill his time. “Right now the show is almost like a snake eating its tail; very rarely are you doing one thing,” Condal said. “Right now, we’re crafting season four before we’ve even finished season three and released it to the world.”

It’s not mentioned in Deadline’s interview, but you have to wonder if Condal’s self-declared Westeros endpoint is due to his falling out with Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, who has spoken out about his disappointment with certain House of the Dragon story choices. Perhaps season three might bring some reunification, and Condal could change his tune?

Not even the Three-Eyed Raven could predict that one. The Targaryens return to fight amongst themselves when House of the Dragon season three arrives June 21 on HBO.
