‘Rogue One’ Becomes a True ‘Andor’ Finale With This Fan Project

In the full year since Andor ended, many have gone to view its predecessor Rogue One in a new light. With the full breadth of Cassian’s life now laid before us in TV and movie format, fan editor David Kaylor has taken it upon himself to make the film feel more like a companion to its canonical prequel.

Later this month, Kaylor will release a cut of Rogue One that “re-envisions [the movie] as the finale and epilogue of Andor.” Where the original movie is from Jyn Erso’s POV, this version tells things from Cassian’s. To that end, it’ll feature the show’s musical themes and leitmotifs, employ flashbacks similar to how the show did, and be more tonally similar to Andor. And when it comes to Rogue One’s controversial CG recreations of Grand Moff Tarkin and Princess Leia, Kaylor will employ fan-made renders from deepfake creator Shamook.

Star Wars fans are no stranger to splicing films and shows together, and Kaylor’s no exception. In the past, he re-edited different versions of the Original Trilogy into their own films and lined up Revenge of the Sith with the Siege of Mandalore from Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ final season. Over the past year, he’s been consistent in building up hype for this Rogue One endeavor with frequent trailers and rescored snippets, including the film’s finale with music from the show. While it’ll undoubtedly spark up conversations about whether Rogue One actually belongs to Cassian or Jyn, this new cut will be an interesting addition to Star Wars’ relationship with its fans and further raise up the film in some fans’ eyes.

You can watch Rogue One: The Andor Cut for free on May 25.
