Report Says Memory Shortage Could Delay Release of New Macs

Highly anticipated upgrades to Apple’s Mac computer models are reportedly hitting delays caused by an ongoing memory shortage brought about by the proliferation of AI, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

Gurman’s anonymous Apple insiders apparently say delays are “plausible” for the new Mac Studio, Apple’s powerful, professional-grade desktop computer, as well as slowing down the release of a potential touchscreen-enabled MacBook Pro.

The upgraded Studio was reportedly going to come out “around the middle of the year”—meaning summer, presumably, but Gurman says Apple is now looking at an October release. Meanwhile, the touchscreen Mac may not debut until next year, Gurman indicates.

The MacBook Neo, a new, entry-level Apple notebook computer has been a huge hit, and has so far appeared to avoid being impacted by the shortage.

The memory shortage has been wreaking havoc on prices. A fresh $100 price hike of the Quest 3 headset was because of the RAM shortage, according to Meta. Some Microsoft Surface devices had their prices increased by as much as $500 because of “recent increases in memory and component costs.” The Raspberry Pi became up to $150 more expensive earlier in April.

Analysts say the price of memory may not level off until next year, or possibly 2028.
