With only a few dozen places in the world capable of showing Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey in its truest format, 70mm IMAX, the jealousy and anger are already very real. Plus, now, it’s about to get worse, because those locations alone now come with a very special extra treat: the opening sequence of Dune: Part Three.
Recently, Dune director Denis Villeneuve mentioned that the opening minutes of his new film, coming on December 18, would be playing with The Odyssey; however, it was unclear at the time which formats would be getting that footage. This week, the official Dune social media accounts finally clarified that it’s only 70mm IMAX. That means only 41 locations in the world will not only screen The Odyssey in 70mm IMAX, but also have it preceded by this special Dune: Part Three footage. Here’s the list:
Experience exclusive footage of #DuneMovie in front of The Odyssey, only in IMAX 70mm. Get there early to not miss it.

Now, we’ve already covered the incredible difficulty some fans (such as myself) had with procuring tickets to see The Odyssey in 70mm IMAX. And that’s just a case of simple supply and demand. Demand is high (everyone wants to see the film in the best possible way), supply is low (only 41 places showing it), so there you have it. Which, if you’re Denis Villeneuve, might seem a little counterproductive. Why only show this footage in 41 theaters when The Odyssey is playing in thousands?
Simple. It’s because Villeneuve, like Nolan, shot much of Dune: Part Three to be seen in 70mm IMAX. Both filmmakers are embracing this incredible, and incredibly rare, theatrical experience. Plus, it’s not like there won’t be Dune: Part Three footage in other theaters. It’ll just be the trailer you’ve probably already seen without the several minutes of exclusive footage.
If you can’t make it to see The Odyssey in 70mm IMAX, though, you’re in luck. We’ve got a description of the Dune footage right here. And, suffice to say, it’s pretty epic. A massive war scene in the rain, unlike anything we’ve seen in Dune to date. That’s gonna be a special movie. One that some audiences will get a special taste of this weekend.
Dune: Part Three opens everywhere on December 18. The Odyssey is now in theaters.
