‘Dungeons & Dragons’ ‘Ravenloft’ Live-Action Series From Alfonso Cuarón in the Works at Netflix

One of Dungeons & Dragons‘ most beloved campaign settings is coming to Netflix. Ravenloft, the gothic horror setting home to the ancient vampire Count Strahd von Zarovich, will be getting a live-action television adaptation (appropriately titled Ravenloft) written by John August (Corpse Bride, Frankenweenie) and executive produced by Alfonso Cuarón (Y tu mamá también, Gravity).

Deadline reports that “the series follows the making of the vampire Darklord Strahd von Zarovich, whose story of power, love, obsession, and undead transformation charts his origins from tragic antihero to one of Dungeons & Dragons’ most notorious villains.”

Ravenloft got its start as an adventure module written by Tracy and Laura Hickman for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons in 1983. Its popularity led to it becoming an official campaign setting in 1990, and it remains a big part of Dungeons & Dragons to this day. In June of this year, publisher Wizards of the Coast (which is owned by Hasbro) released a new Ravenloft sourcebook, Ravenloft: The Horrors Within. There are also a host of tie-in novels set in Ravenloft, so the TV series will have plenty of material from which to draw inspiration.

In 2025, Netflix announced a different live-action Dungeons & Dragons TV series based on a campaign setting, The Forgotten Realms, that was set to be written by Drew Crevello and executive produced by Shawn Levy. According to Deadline, that show is no longer in development. On the tabletop side, Dungeons & Dragons has been transitioning away from the Forgotten Realms as its default campaign setting, replacing it with Greyhawk for the game’s revised fifth edition, which might explain why the project was shelved.

A previously announced Baldur’s Gate TV series, based on the Dungeons & Dragons video game franchise of the same name, is still in the works at HBO from The Last of Us co-creator and showrunner Craig Mazin.
