Dan Stevens Teases His ‘RoboCop’ Will Lean Into Humor

When we heard Prime Video was actually moving forward on its long-in-the-works RoboCop series, we were intrigued. Given our increasingly dystopian reality, the timing feels right for a new take on the story’s themes of corporations with too much power, invasive surveillance, and police-state fears. But lest we forget, the original movie also established an overt satirical tone—something that the new series is going to make sure to incorporate.

This tidbit comes from the lead actor himself, Dan Stevens, whose casting made us even more excited for the new RoboCop show. In a new interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Stevens explained what drew him to the project, which is being created by Peter Ocko (Lodge 49).

“It’s very funny. It’s satirical, and it’s exciting to me that it preserves that sense of the original, which is one of my favorite films of all time. For someone of my generation, it’s right up there. It left an imprint, and I probably saw it too young. It was, perhaps, my first exposure to extreme violence,” Stevens said.

Paul Verhoeven’s film arrived in 1987, kicking off a memorable Hollywood run for the director that also included Total Recall, Basic Instinct, Showgirls, and Starship Troopers, the last being another film that blends satire with gore. (After Hollow Man, he returned to Europe to make less, uh, flashy pictures.)

Stevens continued, “So Peter’s take is just so smart and so funny, and the time is ripe for that kind of take. I feel very excited and very lucky.”

No word yet on when RoboCop might be arriving, but given Stevens’ busy schedule, 2028 feels like the earliest possible arrival.
