Here’s What ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Is Actually About

Grogu, mythosaurs, the Darksaber, Ahsoka, Luke Skywalker, etc. So much has happened in the past several years that it’s easy to forget what The Mandalorian was actually about. It’s about a character, inspired by Boba Fett, hunting and bringing in bounties. That’s what Din Djarin was doing in the first episode, what he’s done many times since, and it seems that’ll be the drive of his movie too.

The first Star Wars movie in seven years, The Mandalorian and Grogu, opens on May 22, and for the longest time, we didn’t quite know what it was about. We knew there was some action, a swole Hutt voiced by the star of The Bear, snow-based action scenes, Sigourney Weaver, and more. But what ties it all together? A new clip was just released that explains it perfectly.

Colonel Ward (Weaver) lays it out pretty plainly there. Find the evil, mysterious Imperial leader Commander Coin. The Hutts know where he is. To get that information, the Mandalorian will have to rescue Rotta the Hutt from captivity. Once he does that, the Hutts will give him Coin’s location. All of which feels fishy for Mando, considering he’s trying to use his skills only for good now. He doesn’t feel right going back to his old ways, but Ward persuades him to.

So where do things go from there? We don’t know. Presumably, though, Mando goes to see the Hutts, they give him Rotta’s location, things go south, and finding Coin becomes less important than saving their own lives.

But I can’t be the only one thinking, “Is that it?” Is The Mandalorian and Grogu just a larger, more elaborate bounty hunt? Three episodes stuffed into one? That’s not necessarily a bad thing if handled well, but we’re hoping it all amounts to something a little more movie-worthy. Maybe the addition of Rotta the Hutt to the mix is one potential clue.

The Mandalorian and Grogu opens on May 22, but it’ll have its world premiere next week. We’ll have more then.
