Every Sonic the Hedgehog movie has added more game characters to the cast, and the same holds true for Sonic 4. As Sonic 3’s mid-credits scene showed us, Metal Sonic is coming for part four, and director Jeff Fowler offered a proper look at the robotic blur now that shooting has wrapped.

“On behalf of this amazing cast and crew, we’ve filmed the BEST Sonic movie yet and can’t wait to share,” he wrote. As some fans online have noted, Metal’s filming standin looks virtually unchanged from the character’s in-game model. Standins for Sonic and other characters have had some alterations, but that doesn’t appear to be the case here.

And that’s a wrap on #SonicMovie4 !!!

Metal Sonic first debuted in 1993’s Sonic the Hedgehog CD, sent to the present day by Robotnik so the evil doctor could rule the future. That same game is also where Amy Rose debuts, and she’s also a prominent character in Sonic 4, voiced by Kristen Bell. Over the years, Metal’s popped up in many Sonic games, including Sonic Rivals and the two Sonic Boom games. He’s also been in the Boom TV series and inspired an evil, robotic Chaos Sonic in Netflix’s Sonic Prime—where, unlike most versions of Metal, Chaos Sonic could actually speak.

And that brings us to a question some Sonic fans have been wondering: will Metal Sonic talk in Sonic 4? Fowler told Polygon in 2025 the team hadn’t decided what route to go with him. But on the chance that he does, will Ben Schwartz voice him, or will those duties go to someone else? Both Sonic and Metal have shared the same voice actor in Japan, but that hasn’t always been the case in English.

We’ll find out for sure when Sonic 4 hits theaters on March 19, 2027.
