A Comic Crossover Sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’ Is Becoming a Movie

Comic book fans are probably aware of this, but movie fans may not be. In 2014, DC/Vertigo and Dynamite Entertainment published a seven-issue series called Django/Zorro. It was a sort of sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s 2012 hit film, Django Unchained, and saw the title character team up with everyone’s favorite masked man to kick a little ass.

Tarantino wrote the comic, along with Matt Wagner, and now, a screenwriter has been hired to adapt it for the big screen. Deadline reports that Brian Helgeland (writer of Mystic River, L.A. Confidential, and A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, as well as the writer and director of A Knight’s Tale) has been tasked by Sony Pictures with continuing Tarantino and Wagner’s vision.

According to the trade, Tarantino won’t be directly involved with the project but did give his blessing for Sony to move ahead with the project. No word if Jamie Foxx would return to reprise his role, but apparently the story will feature a new, younger Zorro.

The comic story picks up a few years after the events of Django Unchained, with Django meeting Diego de la Vega and the two becoming friends in revenge. In the recent films, de la Vega was the older Zorro played by Anthony Hopkins, who passed the mask on to Antonio Banderas. But, again, this will follow a younger Zorro.

Either way, we love a good crossover, and any way to see some of Tarantino’s characters back on screen in some way, shape, or form is wildly intriguing. Helgeland, too, is a very talented writer, so it certainly feels like this is a project we might see someday. But, if you are going to recast Zorro, do you recast Django too? Sony has also previously tried, and failed, to get other crossovers off the ground, such as one combining 21 Jump Street and Men in Black. Do you think this will happen? Let us know what you think below.
