Warner Bros. Thinks Fans Are Ready for Yearly ‘Game of Thrones’ Again

There once was a time—let’s call it 2011 to 2017—when George R.R. Martin fans could expect a new season of Game of Thrones every year. The show’s final installment took a little longer to arrive, bringing the show to its controversial end in 2019. Audiences still tuned in when House of the Dragon premiered in 2022, but it wasn’t until this year’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms that it felt like we were back in that peak Westeros excitement era. And Warner Bros. is very eager to capitalize on that.

At the Variety Entertainment Marketing Summit (via IGN), Shauna Spenley, the chief marketing officer at Warner Bros., explained the studio’s strategy and outlook.

“Game of Thrones is this incredible IP that seems in some ways infinite,” Spenley explained. “And we saw just a couple of months ago with Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is really lighter fare of that IP, just kind of go supernova all over the world. And so there’s clearly a lot of demand. I think this theatrical endeavor will be no exception. House of the Dragon is coming later this summer.”

Spenley continued. “So, it feels now like it really has an audience that has long-term expectations. Again, habitual expectations. They don’t really want to wait a couple of years for every installment.”

Fortunately, the wheels are in motion already. House of the Dragon season three is coming soon, as the executive said, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season two is due next year (if the weather cooperates). Plus, a Game of Thrones movie focusing on Aegon’s Conquest is also in its early stages.

Could this mean that we’ll soon be getting concrete announcements on additional Game of Thrones TV spin-offs as well? There are certainly plenty to choose from if that’s the case. And we’d be thrilled with a confirmed third season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms if Warner Bros. is taking requests.
