Hollywood’s spent years trying to make a Sesame Street movie that you may have forgotten about. Now, it seems the duty to make it happen has fallen to Netflix, and it may be enlisting an interesting pair of directors.

Per Jeff Sneider, the Daniels—aka Daniel Kwan and Scheinert, best known for Everything Everywhere All at Once—will bring the classic kids series to life. With the show on its platform since 2025, the streamer’s reportedly looking to expand it with a full-on movie, starting scratch from an initial idea that went to Warner Bros. in 2015. That project, which went through a few directors and would’ve starred Anne Hathaway, fizzled out over the years thanks to busy schedules and COVID, but now an opportunity has apparently landed in Netflix’s lap.

At time of writing, this Sesame Street movie hasn’t landed a writer yet. The Daniels are currently looking to make a new film headlined by Matt Damon, Emma Stone, and Charles Melton. If the Sesame film is real, it’ll presumably be next on their to-do list, and the enterprise’s first movie since 1999’s Elmo in Grouchland. The educational series has always been a pop culture fixture, particularly nowadays thanks to celebrity guests and Elmo’s beef with Rocco and betrayal of the New York Knicks. But a movie in this day and age would further elevate it—as the recent Muppets revival has shown us, people love them some puppets.

We’ll have more on the potential Sesame Street movie as news emerges.
