House of the Dragon airs its season three finale on HBO this coming Sunday, but the author who created Westeros and the Song of Ice and Fire saga doesn’t have that on his mind. (That’s not surprising, since we all know how he feels about how that particular show has adapted his work.) However, he did drop a new personal post on his Not a Blog, an increasingly rare occurrence. It’s short but poignant and offers a life update without mentioning the Winds of Winter-shaped elephant in the room.
He first thanks his assistants, the “Minions of Fevre River,” who use Not a Blog as a platform to share Martin-adjacent announcements, including licensed merch fans might want to check out and updates on the new Game of Thrones stage play, The Mad King. And while those are helpful, what we really want to know is what’s up with Martin.
“This year has been… stressful, to say the least,” he writes. “So much has been happening, it’s been overwhelming. Some great things, exciting things. Dreams coming true. But there have been nightmares too. I have lost friends. Battled sadness and depression. The worst may be yet to come. I turned seventy-seven last September, and I tell you, getting old is no fun. But there have been amazing times as well.”
He added, “I suppose that’s just life. Of course, I knew that. If you’ve read my stories, you know that.”
He ended with an upbeat mention of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms—an adaptation he does approve of—getting nine Emmy nominations, “including the big one, Best Drama.” (He’s bummed there were no acting nods this time around, “but there’s always next year.”)
He’s hoping to attend the awards ceremony in September, but “that depends on… well, on a lot of things.” We’ll be rooting for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms—and Martin too, who turns 78 just days after the Emmys.
