Nostalgia is a hell of a drug, and Xbox plans to become the dealer of choice for a horde of longtime Xbox fans. Knowing how things have been going lately for Microsoft, that may be its best and only play.
Over the last few days, multiple leaks have indicated that Xbox plans to make titles from each of its generations available across its future devices. A document published by leaker eXtas1s on X and later corroborated by The Verge reflects that, starting in 2027, Xbox will support 360-era titles “across next-gen Xbox devices.”

This will be in addition to the OG Xbox games that are starting to take root on PCs, which use a specialized emulator that imitates the original Xbox hardware in a software environment. Developers have discovered that this emulator runs within the shell of a 360 emulator, like an emulation turducken. That’s important to note, because said turducken will also be compatible with PCs.
The next-gen Xbox, currently dubbed Project Helix, will also be a PC in all but name. Both rumors and Xbox’s own leadership have hinted the console will likely support games from the Xbox Series consoles. As for Xbox One games, you will be in luck there as well. These leaked documents explicitly reference a “Disc to Digital” program. Based on this roadmap, players who insert discs into their consoles will be granted a digital license tied to both their Microsoft account and the disc, which allows them to download the game through the Xbox app on PC and—ostensibly—on the next-gen Xbox console. If you give your disc to a friend and they load it up on a separate Xbox console, you’ll lose access to your digital license. This Disc-to-Digital feature was supposed to be available last month to Windows Insiders beta testers, but it was apparently delayed.
In any case, the future of Xbox clearly promises a full nostalgia dopamine hit right to the big vein. Microsoft’s gaming arm will likely sell these original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles through both Game Pass subscriptions and as their own licenses. The only question is how many games we’ll find available on new hardware. Game licensing is notoriously finicky, and a confusing mess of publishers and rights holders will have to sign off on bringing their games to PC.

Those who don’t share my fondness for the early-2000s Xbox generations may not see what the big deal is. But real ones will remember that Microsoft completely shuttered the Xbox 360 digital store in 2024. That means some titles are now completely unavailable for purchase outside of retro game shops. Microsoft has failed to port games like Gears of War 2 to PC or any other console; they’re only available to stream through Xbox Game Pass. A mountain of titles deserve to be played that you can’t easily access today.
Xbox could have made these backward-compatible games exclusive to its next-gen console. Instead, they’ll be available on every Windows PC. For the sake of game preservation, that decision is certainly welcome. Still, it may not emphasize the pressing need to go out and buy a potentially expensive Helix console. Hell, Microsoft hasn’t even confirmed yet that Project Helix will contain an optical drive to play all the Series or Xbox One games sitting on your shelf.
Project Helix is shaping up to be one of the most interesting consoles ever devised, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it will be worth the money when it arrives. The thought of playing every single game I own on both PC and Xbox is enticing in itself. But if the next-gen console costs too much—more than $1,000, for example, like Valve’s recent Steam Machine—then even the most nostalgic lovers of Xbox’s past may be turned off.
