Matt Murdock may be hiding in the shadows, fighting the evil reign of the Kingpin, but most people don’t know about it. A new report suggests that Daredevil: Born Again season two, which has only two episodes remaining, has only gotten about half the audience it did from season one. That’s quite the drop-off.
ComicBook has data from a company called Luminate that reads, “Through the first five episodes of each season, Daredevil: Born Again season two has accumulated 4,515,000 season views, 10,867,000 hours watched, and 652,000,000 minutes watched. Season one, tracked across the same five-week window, generated 8,357,000 season views, 24,000,000 hours watched, and 1,440,004,000 minutes watched. That represents a decline of approximately 46% in total views and over 54% in total hours watched.”
io9 reached out to Marvel Studios for potential comment or clarification on the numbers but had yet to hear back as of publication.
The numbers do, somehow, make sense, though, do they not? There’s no direct correlation, but just among Marvel fans online, the general buzz around Daredevil: Born Again season two hasn’t been quite what it was for season one. You can feel it. And season one buzz wasn’t anywhere near what we’ve experienced with other Marvel shows in the past, like WandaVision or Loki. You always just assume people are watching these shows because they’re Marvel, but apparently, they’re not.
Assuming these numbers are accurate, though, why do we think only half the audience of season one returned for season two? Well, we know for sure it’s not the quality of the show. Daredevil: Born Again season two has, in our mind, definitely been more entertaining than season one. Plus, the season’s final two episodes, which begin this week, are as good as anything Marvel has done on television to date. Next week’s finale in particular is just stunning, and once people see that, there will be lots of chatter, which will bring people in for sure. We’ll have more on that soon.
Maybe it’s just this general Marvel malaise that we’ve all been experiencing in the wake of Phases Four and Five’s avalanche of content. A problem that Marvel is actively trying to fix with Avengers: Doomsday.
