In the decade between Revenge of the Sith and The Force Awakens, Star Wars was weird. George Lucas didn’t want to make any more movies, so he explored bringing a galaxy far, far away to television. Most of that never got very far. But one show, called Star Wars: Detours, actually completed several dozen episodes before being almost totally forgotten.
First announced in 2012, Star Wars: Detours was going to be The Simpsons but Star Wars. Lucas himself was involved in the show, which was co-created by the Robot Chicken team of Seth Green and Matthew Senreich. However, when Disney bought Lucasfilm, seeing Luke Skywalker and Han Solo be goofy didn’t quite fit in with the brand, so it was shelved indefinitely.
“Well, there are 39 episodes that were finished for broadcast,” Green said back in 2021. “But we finished them almost 10 years ago, and so there would have to be a bit of reconfiguring of the existing stuff to make it something that Disney+ would release as a Lucasfilm offering. And the way it’s been explained to me is that there hasn’t been enough interest high enough up to go through what it would take to put it out, and that there isn’t an interest in releasing this content on Disney+ from Lucasfilm.”
Re-enter George Lucas. Since selling Lucasfilm and Star Wars, Lucas has spent a good chunk of his time creating the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, which is opening in Los Angeles in September. And, in a Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con this week, Green gave fans some very good news.
“There’s going to be a curation of episodes of that show on display for the public at the museum,” he said. “Things like that get so far out of your hands so quickly that I’m just excited for people to get to see it. What it does, how it’s measured, where it sits, none of that will be a part of the story 10 years from now.”
“This is something that we got to do with George, and he had his hands all over it,” Senreich added. “I’m just excited for people to see it.”
It’s not clear how, where, and how many episodes of the show will be at the museum, but it’s awesome that George Lucas thought Detours was an important enough piece of Star Wars history to include it, and that Disney is actually allowing it.
The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art opens to the public on September 22, and tickets are on sale now.
