According to Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool Is Strictly a Supporting Character Now

It’s hard to imagine Ryan Reynolds’ take on Deadpool not being the star of whatever show he happens to be in; with all those fourth-wall breaks, the guy pretty much embodies “main character syndrome.” However, Reynolds recently doubled down on something he’s talked about in the past: moving forward, the snarky, R-rated hero of Deadpool & Wolverine will be repositioning himself as more of an ensemble player.

While being interviewed on Sunday Today (via Variety), Reynolds explained that while fans can probably expect Deadpool to pop up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it won’t be in the manner that some might have expected: as the star of a fourth Deadpool movie.

“I have some stuff kind of written, but I don’t think I am ever going to center him again,” Reynolds said. He co-wrote the scripts for Deadpool 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine and was a producer on all three Deadpool films.

“He is a supporting character. He is a guy who is great in a group.”

In December 2024, Reynolds hinted to the Hollywood Reporter that his thinking was leaning in that direction, despite the smash success of that year’s Deadpool & Wolverine.

“Centering Deadpool works best if you take everything away from him and put his back against the wall. I can’t really do that again,” Reynolds said. “A fourth time feels a little iterative and redundant. That doesn’t mean sacrificing fun. There is still an arc for Deadpool which is fulfilling and powerful.”

In September 2025, Entertainment Weekly asked Reynolds about the rumors that Deadpool might appear in Avengers: Doomsday. Like any actor with the fear of Marvel in him, he remained vague, insisting he’d never “stepped foot on set.”

We’ll find out for sure when Doomsday arrives in December—a movie that will likely clear up a lot about the future of the MCU, including just what the X-Men might be up to next, perhaps even with a scene-stealing Deadpool in the mix.
