Deadline reports Catherine Sarah Hook (The White Lotus) is attached to star in Crush, the upcoming “snake-themed thriller” from director Julius Avery (The Pope’s Exorcist). The story concerns “a woman hiking alone in the Everglades who wakes to find herself trapped in the crushing coils of a massive python, fighting to stay alive as every breath brings her closer to death.”
Get Smart
Deadline also has word John Mulaney is attached to play Maxwell Smart in a new film based on the ’60s spy-comedy series, Get Smart at Warner Bros. Though the project is said to be in very early development, Seth Grahame-Smith (The LEGO Batman Movie, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice) is attached to write the script.
Bond 26
During a recent interview with BBC Radio 4 (via Deadline), Bond 26 screenwriter Steven Knight confirmed an actor has been cast to play Amazon’s James Bond, making writing the project “a little bit easier” for him.
It does make life a little bit easier if you know who that person is, but also you have to write the character, not the actor.
The thing with Bond is it’s its own universe, and it’s its own franchise. So there are certain rules. I mean, obviously you have to move it along, but I love where it sits. I love that it’s British. I love that it’s not DC or Marvel… so I feel a responsibility to the text.
Lust
THR reports YouTube creator Spencer Lackey has been hired to write and direct Lust, a horror film (with a suspiciously similar title to Obsession…) at NEON, Blumhouse Atomic Monster, and Spooky Pictures. Though details on the plot are currently under wraps, Lackey will receive additional “guidance” from producers Steven Schneider, Jason Blum, and James Wan.
Ridley Scott’s Treasure Island
During a recent interview with The Pathé Wepler (via World of Reel and The Ridley Scott Archives) Ridley Scott suggested his upcoming Treasure Island adaptation could be the most expensive film of his entire career.
