It’s way early for prom season, but Halloween is creeping ever closer. We’re now under a month from Stephen King whisperer Mike Flanagan‘s new Carrie series, and Prime Video has just dropped the first full trailer after the teaser we got in July.
“The official trailer begins to pull back the curtain on the urgent and arresting reinvention of Stephen King’s iconic story, offering a revealing glimpse at how the series expands the world, bringing new depth and complexity to its beloved characters while exploring the forces that shape Carrie White (Summer H. Howell) as she navigates the cruelty and pressure of the modern world—building toward a single, shattering night,” reads a Prime Video press release. “But how much do we really know about Carrie—or what happened in Chamberlain?”
With eight episodes to explore the world of King’s first published novel—also the first of his works to be adapted, in Brian De Palma’s now-classic 1976 feature starring Sissy Spacek—Flanagan has plenty of room to dig into the White family and the people who surround them, past and present. At San Diego Comic-Con, the series creator said that even fans who are very familiar with Carrie should set their preconceptions aside while settling in to watch.
“It’s a thrilling way to adapt something, to take it apart into its essential pieces and use that to build something new. That is how we were approaching Carrie,” Flanagan explained. “That’s what got Stephen King very excited about this adaptation. I think a lot of people think they know what the show is. And the biggest thing I’m excited about today is just knowing what a big surprise our Carrie is going to be.”
That includes the famous prom scene, which Flanagan told the SDCC audience will take everyone by surprise; he also said it was the most complex scene he’s ever filmed, which is saying something.
According to the press release, Flanagan directed episodes one, two, seven, and eight; the rest are handled by Kate Siegel, who’s also in the cast in an as-yet-unknown role, Axelle Carolyn, Kyra Sedgwick, and Hiromi Kamata.
The cast is headed up by Summer H. Howell as Carrie White as well as Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White. Siena Agudong is Sue Snell, Alison Thornton is Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette is Tommy Ross, Josie Totah is Tina, Arthur Conti is Billy, Thalia Dudek is Emaline, Amber Midthunder is Miss Desjardin, and Matthew Lillard is Principal Grayle.
The cast also features Michael Trucco, Crystal Balint, Rahul Kohli, Tim Bagley, and Heather Graham.
Carrie arrives October 8 on Prime Video.
