If you see a woman covered in blood walking around Universal Studios over the next few months, don’t be scared. She really, really, really loves you. Like, maybe too much actually.
In less than a month, one of the most popular Halloween events in the whole world, Halloween Horror Nights, begins at Universal Studios Hollywood. It’s a theme park-sized event featuring mazes and scare zones based on some of your favorite horror movies and characters. But this year, the most surprising addition isn’t a huge brand name. It’s the main character from the year’s biggest horror movie: Nikki from Obsession.
Among the news of the final list of mazes coming to the event, which runs select nights from September 3 through November 1, was the reveal that Nikki—specifically Nikki from the end of the movie, covered in blood and wearing her friend’s clothes—will be a walk-around character. That means you could be walking from one maze to another and have Nikki run up to you and scare you.
Considering Obsession is the highest-grossing horror film of the year so far, it makes sense to have some representation. And considering it’s a pretty isolated movie in terms of story and characters, certainly Nikki showing up is the most obvious choice. A full maze might be a lot, especially since the movie was only released a few months ago. Is it a little weird to seemingly glorify a character who was herself a victim? Maybe a bit. But if you start to weigh the morality of characters in horror movies, things can get very messy very quickly.
And, of course, Nikki is but a small part of the totality of Horror Nights, both in Hollywood and across the country in Orlando. Hollywood this year has mazes for Sinners, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, Hellraiser, Evil Dead Burn, and Stranger Things, for example, not to mention lots of Terrifier and more.
