‘Lanterns’ Season 2 Is Already in the Works Whether It Happens or Not

With only one episode down and seven to go, audiences still have almost two months of Lanterns to look forward to. Showrunner Chris Mundy is looking forward too, but way, way further the future. Though the show has just started airing, he’s already working on season two.

“We feel good that we told the story in season one well,” he told the Hollywood Reporter. “The question is whether [season two] is a story people are interested in. We’ll see. I hope so. If that’s the case, then we’ll get to do another one. We’ll tell it in a slightly different way, so that it feels fresh, with characters you know and care about.”

Season one of the show follows Earth’s first Green Lantern, Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), along with his trainee John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), as they investigate several alien murders in Nebraska. The first episode set the bar high, especially with a pretty surprising final scene that we won’t spoil here (we did spoil it here, though!).

And though Mundy came to that season one decision and others with fellow executive producers Damon Lindelof and Tom King, they’ve each moved on to other shows. Mundy is now working with Christopher Cantwell, a comic book writer and co-creator of Halt and Catch Fire, on season two.

“We’re just in the breaking-story stages,” Mundy said. “We’re about six weeks into laying out a season, and then we’ll talk to folks about it really soon.”

Which, yes, acknowledges that season two of Lanterns hasn’t been given a green light yet. Mundy and Cantwell could do months of work, and then it all just goes away. This is something they are both well aware of. “You have to go forward with total confidence as if it’s going to happen,” he said. “If it doesn’t happen, you also have to not be heartbroken. You have to just say, ‘Okay, that’s the way it is.’ It’s this bizarre trick or dance that you have to do for yourself. You’ve got to care so much, and then you’ve got to not be crushed if it doesn’t happen. It’s hard.”

From what we’ve seen of Lanterns (and we’ve seen 7 of the 8 episodes), we think a second season would be great. Fingers crossed we get to see the fruits of that labor.

Lanterns airs on HBO and HBO Max, Sunday nights at 9 p.m. EST.
