An ultra-fancy gala performatively supporting environmental causes being interrupted by activists doesn’t sound too far-fetched. But what if the activists were actually cult members hellbent on kidnapping some rich and famous faces to offer the Earth some flesh-and-blood reparations?
That’s the idea behind Sacrifice, a satirical black comedy from Romain Gavras that stars Chris Evans as a washed-up movie star snatched from a party hosted by a billionaire couple (Vincent Cassel, Salma Hayek Pinault) by the gun-toting Joan (Anya Taylor-Joy) and her minions.
As the first trailer for the Netflix film makes clear, the cult believes that unless three people are tossed into a nearby volcano, an extinction-level event will soon unfold.
The cast also features Sam Richardson and John Malkovich, as well as pop stars Yung Lean and Charli xcx.
“It’s such a meta movie to be a part of,” Taylor-Joy told Netflix blog Tudum. “I see a lot about individual effort versus collective effort. I see a lot about just how numb people have become, the lack of importance placed on things that actually matter rather than this easier, entertaining way of looking at things. It’s this concept that you can sweep things under the rug, and I think Joan and her tribe are cold water in the face to that.”
Sacrifice hits Netflix in the U.S. and France on October 16. Will you be taking what looks to be a very wild ride with this one?
