Here’s the Perfect Excuse to See ‘Project Hail Mary’ Again

Watch Project Hail Mary again, question? Yes, we’d love to. The Ryan Gosling sci-fi adventure film is a box office smash, and there are already a ton of different ways to make each and every theatrical experience unique. It is, after all, playing in a dozen different formats. But this week, a wholly new experience was announced, and it makes us want to see the film again, ASAP.

MGM has teamed up with an app called TheaterEars to release an exclusive director commentary to listen to during the movie, in the theater. It’s an app that’s primarily designed so Spanish-speaking people can enjoy movies in theaters without dubbing or subtitles, but of course, there are other applications. Such as having Phil Lord and Chris Miller tell you about their movie as you watch it on the big screen.

All the information is there in that tweet, and you can download TheaterEars at this link. Currently, it’s for iPhone only, though. Sorry, Android fans. Rocky is, apparently, an Apple guy.

Of course, this isn’t exactly a new idea, but it’s a rare one. Kevin Smith has done it in the past for some of his films. Rian Johnson did it a few years back for Knives Out. Tim Heidecker even did one as far back as 2012 for the movie The Comedy. Great job!

Even so, it’s still a very cool way to experience a movie you have, presumably, seen before with fresh eyes. The danger is that you do have to use your phone during the movie, and hopefully the volume doesn’t distract any theatergoers around you who haven’t seen the movie. So there’s certainly a balancing act there (don’t forget to bring headphones!). All things done correctly, though, we think this is a fantastic idea. Now we’re wondering, will Lord and Miller do another commentary for the eventual home release? Or is it one and done?

The commentary on TheaterEars just came out, so we have not yet had a chance to listen. But, if you do, drop a comment below to tell us how it is.
