As is tradition, ahead of the theatrical re-release of Marvel’s aptly titled Avengers Endgame: Encore, grainy smartphone footage of the film’s extra scenes has leaked online, revealing how the film will tie into Avengers: Doomsday come December.
The original plan for Marvel Studios’ rerelease of Avengers Endgame: Encore, which returns to theaters on September 25, was to impart the nostalgic feeling of seeing Earth’s mightiest heroes on the silver screen like it was 2019 again while also providing new scenes to get folks more hype come December for Avengers: Doomsday. That last bit saw the studio include alternate post-credits scenes, depending on the theater folks were in—Clue-style—showcasing different scenes. According to Kotaku, those scenes leaked on Reddit from a preview screening and have since migrated to X/Twitter, leading Marvel Studios to copyright strike them like a game of whack-a-mole, only for a new compiled supercut to repopulate online. This is why we can’t have nice things.
If you want to walk into your gacha-pull screening of Avengers Endgame: Encore without the extra after-credits scene spoiled, consider yourself warned. And for others curious about what those scenes entail without wanting to endure the whole rigmarole of buying extra theater tickets, here’s what happens in the clips circulating online.
One of the Avengers Endgame: Encore extra scenes doing the rounds online tacks on a new ending to the moment where Steve Rogers reunites with Peggy Carter. Here, after their cathartic kiss, the couple hears a knock on their door. Cap hides behind a wall while Peggy answers the door, revealing Loki. At this point, the crowd erupts in applause, drowning out whatever Loki says, and the retired Captain America steps forward as they all exchange concerned glances. This isn’t the only Loki season two homework folks will have had to do to make sense of Avengers Endgame: Encore‘s extra scenes.
The second leaked scene from Avengers Endgame: Encore circulating online shows Owen Wilson’s Mobius M. Mobius dealing with a crisis at TVA headquarters. What starts as a visual of two multiverses collapsing on each other reveals, before their collision, that they’re shooting missiles at each other. More alerts flash on screens about universes colliding, leading Ke Huy Quan’s Ouroboros to reveal that the multiverse is collapsing. Dun dun dun!
The third leaked Avengers Endgame: Encore extra after-credit scene, while less bombastic, does more work to dovetail into the looming doomsday on the horizon. In it, we see a clip of Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner, who has sequestered himself in a bunker thousands of miles below Earth’s surface, declaring that Hulk won’t be able to get out and no one can get in. We can only guess this scene takes place after Spider-Man: Brand New Day, because in Banner’s own recording of himself inside the bunker, he reveals he’s been cooking up a gamma ray suppressor in the lab. Evidently, his bunker isn’t as ironclad as Banner hoped, because an intruder interrupts him. While we don’t see who it is, the green sigils that etch themselves into the ground as if through teleportation make it clear it’s Doctor Doom. What purpose Doom would have in kidnapping Banner is anyone’s guess, but we’re sure it’s only going to make Thor look at the New Avengers and sigh at their odds of dealing with the new big bad, come Doomsday.
In total, the confirmed three leaked clips clock in at around four minutes. Keep in mind, they’re not meant to be viewed this way, obviously, giving moviegoers reason to spin the block on the off chance a different screening will showcase a new scene altogether. Evidently, this worked out well enough for Marvel Studios with their teaser trailers for Doomsday—which also leaked (twice!).
Nevertheless, no one likes looking at grainy cellphone footage of anything. Folks can check out the new scenes in Avengers Endgame: Encore the way they were intended to be viewed when the movie returns to theaters on September 25.
