Audiences spoke with their wallet this weekend, and they love them some Hoppers.
Per the Hollywood Reporter, the latest Pixar feature opened to $88 million worldwide, with $46 million of that from the domestic crowd. It makes for the studio’s biggest launch for their original movies since Coco back in 2017, and the best domestic opening for an original animated movie since The Wild Robot. Where Pixar’s other 2020s films like (Onward and Elio) had baggage like the early Covid pandemic or lackluster marketing, that wasn’t the case with Hoppers. Disney’s been really pushing this one for some time, and even showed it to critics weeks in advance to help build word of mouth, which has been pretty high so far.
That’s not the case with Warner Bros.’ The Bride!, which has had mixed reactions from critics and audiences alike. Maggie Gyllenhaal’s crime caper take on the Bride of Frankenstein woke up to $13 million worldwide, with $7 million of that coming from North America. Domestically, it came in third behind Hoppers and Scream 7 despite the latter film falling 72.1% and making $17.1 million in its second weekend. At time of writing, the slasher sequel has made $150 million worldwide.
With how well Hoppers is doing, it might end up taking top spot next weekend, unless it gets beaten out by a non-genre movie. For sci-fi and horror fans, the rest of the month includes Project Hail Mary and Ready or Not 2 on March 20, and They Will Kill You and the Hulu exclusive Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice on March 27. All look good and have reasons for people to go see them…but are they strong enough to dethrone cartoon beavers for #1 at the box office?
